Rui says it well.
Some writers and artists like to improvise a story as they go along. Cassavetes did it in Shadows (1959). I heard that Moebius did it at times. But improvising isn’t the same as working instinctively.
I’m working on my thesis right now. It will be ready in May. My final project is an interactive world based on symbols found in dreams, myths and religion.
Here’s an interview with me at Time of the thieves.
Time of The Thieves introduce you to: Sara Söderholm
TTT. What’s your name?
S.S. My name is Sara Söderholm.
TTT. Where were you born and where do you live?S.S. I was born in Stockholm, Sweden, where I still live.
TTT. What is your profession?S.S. I’m a bachelor student in graphic design and illustration at Konstfack university college.
TTT. When did you start being in illustration and why?S.S. I’ve always enjoyed drawing and I keep on doing it because it’s a good way to express feelings in a way that words can’t.
TTT. What are your favorites artists or which artists have influenced your work?S.S. I like the simplicity and strangeness of Marcel Dzama, Carson Ellis and Stine Belden Røed.
TTT. What are the elements that inspire you in your work (images, feelings, music characters)?S.S. Surrealism, melancholy, psychology, patterns and silly things that humans find important often inspire me.
TTT. Can you tell us what you’re looking to convey with your work?S.S. I would like to make serious and heavy things seem less scary somehow. Maybe even funny.
TTT. Have you ever exhibited and if you have, where has it been?S.S. No, not yet, but I would love to one day.
TTT. What music are you listening to?S.S. Right now my favorites are Animal Collective and Blackbird Blackbird.
TTT. Which websites do you like?S.S. Bloglovin’ where I keep track of my favorite blogs.
TTT. What are you reading now?S.S. Nothing unfortunately, but I’m curious about Marguerite Duras.
TTT. What is your favorite place?S.S. Home!
TTT. Can you tell us in what circumstances you made this illustration?S.S. I had been trying to understand space and felt that it became a bit too much for my brain to cope with. Too many strange and complicated things going on out there in the universe. And we’re all a part of it, that’s perhaps the weirdest thing. It’s all very mysterious.
TTT. If you could associate this image with a song, which would it be?S.S. Opera #2 by Vitas (check on youtube). I get the same feeling when I hear his voice. Surreal.
TTT. What do you feel when you look at this illustration?S.S. Im space I’m smaller than a tiny particle.
Here’s a little bumper I made in school for MTV Charts.
I’m in the latest issue of SOVA magazine. Quote and illustration. It can be bought here.
Angst!
